Vrijdag 6 december 2013 organiseert UvA Pride, de roze organisatie binnen de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), om 16.00 uur de maandelijkse lezing. In een serie over homoseksualiteit en religie is dit de vervolglezing waar alles om ‘zonde’ draait: The Islamic Sin, of Islam & the homosexual sin. De lezing vindt plaats in de Crea Theaterzaal, Nieuwe Achtergracht 170 in Amsterdam. Na afloop begint om 17.00 uur de maandelijkse roze borrel in het Crea Café. De ‘meest open-minded borrel van Amsterdam’ is voor studenten, medewerkers, alumni en hun vrienden en vindt iedere maand plaats na de lezing van UvA Pride.

As part of our lecture series on the relation between sexuality and sin, we are proud to have Dino Suhonic as our speaker for the next lecture. It seems almost unthinkable to claim that there is space for reconciling sexual diversity and current islamic thought. Many Muslim authorities claim that homosexuality is categorically forbidden, but developments in the last two decades are showing that reality is not that simple. The reinterpretation of the Quranic texts are giving a much more nuanced picture of h ow sexual diversity could be tolerated in Muslim communities. Are there alternative spaces for those who name themselves Queer Muslims?
And are there any chances that the gap between the LGBT and muslim community in the Netherlands, as well as the rest of the world, could be smaller? How can we challenge religious leaders, politicians, policy makers and human rights activists to rethink how they see this huge and complex global problem? Dino Suhonic is Bosnian, muslim and gay, chairman of Maruf, the first Muslim LGBT organization in the Netherlands, high school teacher and editor at Nieuwemoskee.nl. He started the first empowerment program for queer muslim in Netherlands and is part of the ‘Global Queer Muslim Network’. Dino Suhonic also appeared in several Dutch television programs and newspapers like NRC Next, Volkskrant and Parool.
