Vrijdag 29 april 2011 verzorgt Gert Hekma een lezing in Leiden: Seksuele revolutie in Nederland tussen 1960 en 1975, in de Spextrumzaal van Plexus, Kaiserstraat 25 (17.30-18.30 uur). Aansluitend vindt in de Faculty Club, Rapenburg 73 de maandelijkse Ganymedes Borrel plaats tot 21.00 uur. Daarna is overal Koninginnenacht losgebarsten. Ganymedes is de Leidse variant van UvA Pride: een netwerkgroep voor roze studenten en medewerkers van de Universiteit Leiden. In de Griekse mythologie was Ganymedes de zoon van koning Tros, de stichter van Troje (zie afbeelding). De goden lieten een oogje op hem vallen; Homerus noemde hem de ‘mooiste der stervelingen’. Zeus kaapte hem weg en bracht hem naar de Olympus. Ganymedes stond symbool voor homoseksualiteit.

In the 60s, the Western world was at a great turning point concerning sexuality, the impact of which was extra large in the Netherlands. Concerning sex issues, the Netherlands had been a conservative country. During the late sixties, however, the Dutch nation got on the forefront of sexual freedom. Amsterdam developed into a “sex” and “gay capital”, where the gay bars and red light districts became an international attraction. Gay men and lesbian women were no longer seen as sinners, criminals and psychopaths after 1970. Women achieved greater sexual autonomy and escaped the patriarchal supervision of their fathers and husbands. In this lecture, the sexual revolution as well as its background and further development will be covered.
Gert Hekma is assistant professor at the department of sociology and anthropology at the Universiteit van Amsterdam and is specialized in gay studies. He has published on the history and sociology of (homo)sexuality. Examples of his work are Homoseksualiteit in Nederland van 1730 tot de moderne tijd (2004) and ABC van de perversies (2009). He contributed to reports on the acceptance of homosexuality in the Netherlands by the Dutch social and cultural planbureau: Gewoon doen (2006) and Steeds gewoner, nooit gewoon (2010).
