Vrijdag 17 september 2010 opent de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) het nieuwe Amsterdam Research Center for Gender and Sexuality (ARC-GS). De opening wordt opgeluisterd door de lezing ‘Sexual Whiteness and the Politics of Sexclusion’ en een aansluitende borrel, van 15:00 tot 18:00 uur in Room D1.08, Oudemanhuispoort. De toegang is gratis. Het centrum maakt deel uit van de ASSR, het Amsterdamse onderzoeksinstituut voor sociale wetenschappen en heeft als doel om samenwerking in onderwijs en onderzoek op het gebied van seksualiteit en gender op de UvA te stimuleren (bron: persbericht).
De introductie wordt verzorgd door Sébastien Chauvin (UvA), Jolande Sap (Tweede Kamer, Groenlinks) en Rosi Braidotti (Universiteit Utrecht). De Franse socioloog Éric Fassin verzorgt de lezing over de rol van seksualiteit in de vorming van nationaliteiten in Frankrijk en Europa. . Hij werkt aan het Département de sciences sociales, École normale supérieure & EHESS in Parijs. De voertaal is Engels.
Inhoud: Europe is becoming white. The discriminations against immigrants and their descendants entail a racialisation of European nations, including in the French supposedly universalist Republic. While this racialisation targets non-white populations, it also affects those who are simultaneously identified as Whites. This emergent whiteness is generally perceived as a class phenomenon. The declining working-class now defines itself in racial terms: workers depend on the (largely symbolic) “wages of whiteness”. But whiteness is also about national identity, in France and throughout Europe. National whiteness is defined in the name of democracy – especially “sexual democracy”, through the politics of the Islamic veil (or the burqa) and sexual violence (forced marriage, polygamy, and genital mutilations). Sexual whiteness thus becomes a rhetoric of identification on the one hand, sexclusion on the other.
