UvA Pride Mosse Lezing over roze activisme in Brazilië

Prof. Denilson Lopes (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) presents a brief history of LGBTQ issues related to activism in Brasil, especially within academia. The provided history will go from the 1970s – when the political openness after the military regime resulted in an increase in anthropological and historical studies – to the 1990s – when issues related to the AIDS crisis and the rise of a queer perspective were studied, especially in literary and film studies. This happened at the same time that LGBT topics were more discussed and presented for broader audiences by mass media. Moreover, he will attempt to introduce an ethics and an aesthetics for the case of Brazil which – different from traditional gay identities – redefines the meanings of invisibility beyond the known motto silence=death. He will use imagery from the movies Madame Satã (2006) by Karin Aïnouz and The Famous and the Dead (2010) by Esmir Filho to illustrate his perspective. Lecture is in English, admission is free, link to Facebook.

Prof. Denilson Lopes received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Brasília in 1997. At the moment, he occupies the Chair Rui Barbosa of Brazilian Studies at Leiden University, and is a tenured professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro with a research grant from the Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa. He is the author of many books and articles such as O Homem que Amava Rapazes e Outros Ensaios (The Man Who Loved Young Men And Other Essays, Rio de Janeiro, Aeroplano, 2002). Currently, prof. Lopes is finishing a new book called At the Heart of the World: Transcultural Landscapes of Contemporary Cinema, and starting a new research called Stagings of the Ordinary that establishes a dialogue among cinema, theater and performance.
