Wieringa is managing director of Aletta, the home of the renowned collection, the International Archives for the Women’s Movement. Aletta aims to inspire, to expand knowledge on the position of women and to promote research in this area. ‘In my capacity as the holder of the chair on Gender and Women’s Same-sex Relations Crossculturally at UvA I have been the coordinator of a project on Breaking the Silence on Women in Same-sex Relations Globally. With 11 teams from 8 countries in Africa and Asia we carried out an oral history project, in which some 300 women or transpersons told their life stories (in over 10 languages). In the lecture I will discuss the preliminary major findings of this research and discuss the methodology. The fieldwork phase has just finished, the final workshop was held from 10 – 19 September.’
