Het idee is simpel: laat platforms die profiteren van het verspreiden van fake news en hate speech betalen als ze die niet snel verwijderen. Facebook is er Duitsland al mee bezig, als antwoord op de ingevoerde wet. It’s true that tough regulations might cause Facebook to take down more posts while they try to figure out if it is illegal. But that simply means that we will have to get more of our news from regulated, honest news sources like mainstream newspapers.

It’s not perfect, but it’s the best bet we have to stop fake news before the election. And it’s already working in Germany! Facebook is working with experts to detect lies, decrease the frequency of such posts being shown in our feeds and add a warning message before they do more harm.
